Keisuke Honda was planning to retire from football before Melbourne Victory offered him an A-League contract. The Japanese player said he planned to call it quits after the World Cup in Russia before Victory coach Kevin Muscat convinced him to play on in the A-League.

The 32-year-old fronted a large media contingent on Wednesday after arriving in Melbourne earlier in the week. “I’m excited,” he said. “I’m so glad that I can try a new challenge in my career.
