Thousands greet Pope Francis on arrival in Irish village of Knock

Pontiff travels to famous shrine after meeting survivors of abuse in private

Pope Francis arrived in the west of Ireland village of Knock in pouring rain on Sunday morning, on the second day of a visit to Ireland which has failed to quell mounting anger over abuse within the Roman Catholic church.

He was greeted by hundreds of schoolchildren, whose excitement was undiminished by the mist and rain, before heading to the Marian shrine, the site of an apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1879.
