Q&A: Eric Abetz says Liberal leadership turmoil not to blame for Victorian wipeout

Tasmanian senator rejects criticism of party hardliners, while fellow panellist Labor’s Doug Cameron says people have had enough of ‘neoliberal approach’

The Liberal senator Eric Abetz has played down the role federal government woes might have played in the Victorian election result, and said it was “anyone’s guess” what might happen in the New South Wales and federal elections next year.

Speaking on the ABC’s Q&A panel show, Abetz conceded that federal issues might have played a role but he believed that state issues were more important. He said it was clear that the Victorian result, in which Labor won landslide victory with as many as 16 seats over the Coalition, was not what his side of politics wanted.
