Manchester City’s chances of returning to Wembley were never on thin ice after their 9-0 first-leg victory but Pep Guardiola was relieved his players came through this game unscathed as Burton Albion’s pitch frosted up in sub-zero temperatures.
Sergio Agüero’s first-half goal was sufficient to win the game, on a night when Nigel Clough’s League One team did themselves proud, but the City manager was just as glad his mixture of expensive players and young hopefuls did not pick up any serious injuries on a treacherous surface. “The game was very dangerous because the pitch was so slippery,” Guardiola said. “But no injuries, that is so important. We enjoy the moment because we are in a final. We know in Wembley, as we [discovered in beating Arsenal 3-0] last season, it’s quite special. It’s nice to play a final in Wembley.”
