Brexit: May asks for article 50 extension to 30 June as Tusk offers up to a year

PM’s letter comes as European council chief offers ‘flextension’ to could be cut short if deal is ratified

Theresa May has written to the European council president, Donald Tusk, asking for an extension to article 50 to 30 June.

In her letter, the prime minister wrote: “The United Kingdom is seeking a further extension … [and] proposes that this period should end on 30 June 2019. If the parties are able to ratify before this date, the government proposes that the period should be terminated early.”
