Ashleigh Barty has recorded the best start to a tennis season by an Australian in 16 years, surging into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open with an 11th straight victory. Now Barty faces the ultimate test of her French Open title credentials against reigning Roland Garros champion Simona Halep, undoubtedly the world’s premier women’s clay-court player.
Barty’s 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 third-round defeat of Yulia Putintseva improved the 23-year-old’s win-loss record in 2019 to 23-3, matching Lleyton Hewitt’s start in 2003. Like Barty this year in Fed Cup, Hewitt was also unbeaten in Davis Cup that season too, helping Australia to its 28th and most recent title in the century-old teams’ event.
