David Warner falls for duck in Australian audition for World Cup opening berth

  • Steve Smith shines with 89 not out in Brisbane

David Warner’s return to the top order for Australia was short-lived but Steve Smith showed glimpses of his best as World Cup preparations continue in Brisbane. Warner (0) and Smith (89 not out from 77 balls) provided a mixed bag in their second games back in Australian colours since the Cape Town sandpaper scandal in March 2018.

Smith hit three sixes over mid-off and thumped a straight drive past the bowler early in his innings, exploding in the final eight overs as the hosts posted 277-6 from their 50 overs against a New Zealand XI at Allan Border Field.
