'Bigger is not always better': Adelaide festival looks increasingly out of step

Sydney and Perth’s festivals champion local work that reckons with Australia’s past, but Adelaide’s could be happening anywhere in the world

Australia invests heavily in its major festivals: $5m in state government funding for Sydney festival, $7m for Perth, and $9m for Adelaide.

Funding has remained relatively constant over the past five years even as it has been slashed for other arts. Adelaide festival will even receive an additional $1.25m a year for the next three years while the rest of the local sector faces cuts.
