Palace letters: release of Queen's correspondence on Whitlam's 1975 dismissal – live

After a four-year legal battle by the historian Jenny Hocking, the national archives releases letters between the Queen and the governor general, Sir John Kerr. Follow live updates

I’m in Canberra at the National Archives of Australia for a briefing about the palace letters. The briefing has just kicked off. We’re currently hearing some procedural matters. David Fricker, the NAA director-general, is due to speak shortly. He will give us background and context to the papers, field questions, and explain the archives’ response to the high court decision.

So, how did we get here?

The last of Sir John Kerr’s letters was written in December 1977, when he ended his post as governor general.
