Western Australia artist Ngarralja Tommy May has taken out the top prize in the prestigious 2020 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art awards (Naatsia). The painter and printmaker, who is a Wangkajunga and Walmajarri man, was born at Yarrnkurnja in the Great Sandy Desert. He dances and sings Kurtal, a ceremony relating to the main jila (living waterhole) in his country. His work has been exhibited in Australia and internationally.
