AFL 2021 premiership season: Adelaide Crows stun Geelong - as it happened

  • Adelaide 15-13 (103) beat Geelong 13-13 (91)
  • Walker kicks five goals in shock Crows win

This match might not have appealed as a must-see in round one but looks can be deceiving. In the end, it was a colossal contest played at frenetic pace and finals-like intensity. It was also one for the underdogs, with the Crows exceeding all expectations to deliver an early blow to Geelong’s title aspirations.

On this evidence Adelaide have left behind their meandering ways of 2020. They jumped the Cats - kicking 11 goals to five in the first half, a salvo that included seven in the second quarter - with relentless tackling pressure and a commitment to fast ball movement that made full use of the new Man On The Mark rule.

The Crows could barely lift their legs in the end but they hang on for a quite remarkable victory. Completely against the odds but utterly deserved.
