Australia should commit to more effective aid, increase resettlement, and offer permanent asylum to those already in Australia
Last week the US president, Joe Biden, announced the withdrawal of all remaining American troops from Afghanistan by 11 September, 2021, leaving Afghanistan with an uncertain fate.
The September date marks 20 years since the commencement of “Operation Enduring Freedom”, when US allies, including Australia, responded to the 9/11 terrorist attacks by commencing armed combat in Afghanistan. That action began an exhausting, expensive conflict. Afghanistan is the longest war that the US – and Australia – have ever known.
