Away victories in the Six Nations are supposed to be rare but this was the third in four matches this season as Ireland recovered from their opening-night setback against England to grind down a Scotland team that, while never being in a position to win, took some putting down.
Ireland lost the contact battle against England but here, led by the returning Sean O’Brien, James Ryan and Bundee Aki they forced mistakes out of a willing but outmuscled Scotland side that, missing a number of leading forwards, made more than 230 tackles.
